Our Special Time

2024

Seen from behind, an older woman leans in close to a child, one arm wrapped around, pointing off toward something in the distance. Ahead of them a fair or market scene dissolves into loose, glowing brushwork, tents and figures and a bright yellow parasol suggested more than drawn, everything softened by warm afternoon light. The two of them stand apart from the crowd, heads tilted together, sharing whatever it is she’s pointing at. I let the background blur almost abstract so the two figures in front stay the sharpest, quietest thing in the whole painting, the actual point of it all.
